How to Cut Hay from a Little Meadow?

If you wanted to mow a couple of acres for hay, either for a wildflower meadow, or to feed a few farm animals on a smallholding, what do you cut it with? For simple practicality I would probably use an old drum mower on a tractor, but it might be the least charming option.
