My painting of landscapes is grounded in a long and involved working connection with the countryside. I try to call to mind in my work something of the stunning beauty and forever changing moods of the surroundings; what you experience when you look up for a moment and take stock of all that is around you. I see traces of the work of previous generations all over the landscape and I think this has a big influence on how I depict rural subjects and what I choose to paint.
